As I continue to research and develop my new coaching course on values, I’ve been reading a lot of Adam Grant’s writing. Here’s a tweet of his from X in 2022 that I’ve been thinking a lot about:
“Following your passion is a luxury. Following your values is a necessity.
Passion is a fickle magnet: it pulls you toward your current interests. Values are a steady compass: they point you toward a future purpose.
Passion brings immediate joy. Values provide lasting meaning.”
Assuming you agree with this, how connected are you as a leader, founder, human to your values? When did you last take some time to re-examine them?
Are your actions and decisions in alignment with your current values, or based on previous beliefs from a few years ago? Or maybe, based on somebody else values that you decided to emulate?
I’ve been speaking with many founders and clients about this recently, and we all realised that we were very different people in Year 0 of our startups than we were in Year 2 or Year 6 or upon exit. But almost none of us stopped to reflect on who we’d become along the way – only in retrospect.
And that almost always impacted our decision-making abilities.
As many of my clients ask me to help them become better leaders, I’m building a course that starts with re-connecting with our current values – so that we better know who we are and make decisions based on what we deem important/essential to us now (as opposed to past beliefs or those of others).
