Brene Brown and Values

More thinking out loud about values…. In her book “Dare to Lead”, Brene Brown says:

“A value is a way of being or believing that we hold most important. Living into our values means that we do more than profess our values, we practice them. We walk our talk – we are clear about what we believe and hold important, and we take care that our intentions, words, thoughts, and behaviors align with those beliefs.”

I’m in firm agreement here and I also believe that in order to become an effective leader – for a startup, for a team, for a company, whatever – we must be in alignment with our own values in order to be confident and comfortable with our decisions.

Problem is, it’s easy to lose sight of what our most important values are. And, to make things harder, some of these values change over time.

There are plenty of tools out there there to help us identify our values. Ms. Brown offers an exercise that starts with a list of 100 values (you can add more if you wish) and then she asks you to whittle them down to 20, 10, 5 and finally TWO values that are most important to you now.

Do you have a sense of what your top 2 values are?

When was the last time you checked in on your values?

I’m currently fascinated with values and values-based decision making for leaders. So fascinated that I’m designing a course on this for founders and other senior executives of fast growing companies.

It’s still a work in progress, but if you’d like to learn more, message me here or at paul@asiafoundercoaching.com.
