Steve Jobs famously said “You can’t connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backward. So, you must trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.”
You never know how something you do one day will have a positive impact on something you do years later.
To me, this is an explicit encouragement to try new things, stretch the boundaries, visit the unfamiliar, try on new clothes…
I’ve always tried to do that (which is why headhunters could never figure out what to do with me).
In my quote/unquote career, I’ve been a caterer, dry cleaner, school bus driver, teacher, filmmaker, video game producer, merchant marine, animation studio head and a bunch of other things before becoming an entrepreneur and eventually, a Founder Coach.
Although this career arc must have driven my parents crazy, I don’t regret a minute of it (although I could have spent less time washing dishes and cleaning toilets).
These life experiences all feed into what I bring to the table as a coach today.
They may not have a direct impact on your current issues, but I’m a firm believer that all these experiences, all the people I’ve met and all the “foreign” places I’ve been contribute to what I bring to the coaching table today – and make me a better coach.

And yes, I got to drive the truck and slide down the fire station’s pole.
