On Kindness… A few years back, I found myself at a burger bar in Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, where my flight to SFO had been delayed by a few hours, threatening my connection back to Singapore.
Not in the best of moods, I ordered a cheeseburger and a beer as solace. The burger arrived, then after some delay the fries showed up, followed a few minutes later by the ketchup and mustard. No sign of the beer.
I must have said something a bit churlish to the waiter, because the guy sitting next to me said something I’ll never forget:
“Dude, chill. Nobody gets up in the morning wanting to serve burgers to a**holes at O’Hare.”
It did indeed chill me right down and I subsequently got the beer and made my connection. And I left a big tip.
As Plato is rumored to have said: “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.”
